Guy Fawkes Night

ImageAs a mixed community collectively we are exposed to many different celebrations, and traditions, so why not share these experiences.  Sinainet will try to give you the heads-up on all the celebrations, but if you have some special tradition from home then drop us a line at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .    So we will start with ‘Guy Fawkes night’.  What’s it all about?  Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated in Britain annually on November 5th. The event is accompanied by firework displays, the lighting of bonfires, the ceremonial effigy-burning of one Guy Fawkes, and the rhyme “remember remember the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason and plot”.

Ramadan Kareem

ImageRamadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Hijri (lunar) calendar.  Each new month of the calendar begins when the new moon is sighted, which lasts for 29 days.  This means a year is 354 days, and why Ramadan starts approximately 11 days earlier each year when the new moon is sighted.

During the month of Ramadan it is believed that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received a visit from the Archangel Gabriel, who revealed the 114 surahs of the Quaran. This is why it is a month devoted to the Muslim faith; it is also believed that during the month of Ramadan all your sins can be burnt away, if you are devout.

WADI GINAI BEACH CLEANUP REPORT

Claire Newton, WADI GINAI BEACH CLEANUP REPORT, 08 JUNE 2006 (World Oceans Day); First project I coordinated with the help of the Volunteer Rangers was to organize a beach clean up at Wadi Ginai for World Oceans Day on the 8th June.

Aim: To clean up a particularly dirty area of natural beauty in Dahab – the coastal stretch down at Wadi Ginai, where there are over 6 dive sites in regular use.  The importance of removing this rubbish is to prevent it from ending up in the sea where it threatens the life of the coral reef and its inhabitants. It was also a chance to try and get the Dahab community involved as a whole.

Exodus documentary film

Recent films from "The Passion of the Christ" to the fictional "Da Vinci Code" may have reignited the public's interest in matters of faith, but a newly completed movie could go far beyond the impact of both blockbusters, potentially verifying the historical accuracy of much of the Bible.

The two-hour feature documentary titled "Exodus" has been in the making for five years, and is expected to be released in the spring of 2007.

Sharm to Saudi Causeway Feasible

A senior Egyptian official yesterday emphasized the significance of the proposed $3-billion Saudi-Egyptian Causeway project, saying it would help link the African and Asian continents and facilitate the traffic of pilgrims and workers to the Kingdom.

Fouad Abdul Aziz Khaleel, adviser to the Egyptian transport minister and chairman of the Arab Roads Administration, said the project could be carried out within three years with the support of specialized international companies without incurring any expenditure for Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Khaleel expressed his hope that companies involved in the project, developing the causeway on a build-operate-transfer basis, could recuperate their investment within a decade from its completion date. He did not say whether the two countries had reached any agreement on implementing the project.

Taba Heights New Golf Course

Taba Heights is soon to open the area’s newest championship golf course in October 2006. With the dramatic Sinai Mountains providing its backdrop, the course will overlook the azure waters of the Red Sea, offering views of Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel.

Designed by John Sanford, a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, the new 18-hole championship golf course complies with all PGA standards and regulations, offers a full practice and driving range facility, club house, bar and pro shop.

The course itself will measure 7,100 yards (6,450m) and is designed to suit and challenge golfers of all levels. As part of this philosophy, each hole will offer the option of five different tee placements, allowing golfers to either undergo exciting challenges or stick within their handicap levels. The course is considered to be the most challenging when the back tees are used and becomes progressively easier when the remaining tees are used. Golfers can expect many target fairways and approach shots over lakes, flood canals or well surrounded desert green complexes. Offering a mix of up- and downhill fairways, large undulating greens and pot-like bunkers, the diversity means that even badly hit shots can provide either a severe penalty or nice reward.
