St Catherine’s mosaic restoration |
|
The mosaic which covers the upper part of the east dome of the church at St. Catherine’s is to undergo restoration by an Italian team who specialize in antique mosaics. The mosaic is considered the oldest and most beautiful of its kind in the Middle East and is thought to date back to the 6th century AD and have been made in Constantinople. It is made from small pieces of coloured glass mostly red and blue on a dark gold background. The mosaic depicts Christ standing with the Prophet Elijah on his left and Moses the Prophet on his right; it is framed with paintings of the Twelve Apostles and the abbot of the monastery. The agreement was made between the Italian team and the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) which stresses the need to restore the mosaic with the most suitable materials. Several parts of the mosaic have been damaged, with several tiles missing. The Italian restorers are confident that all the defects will be delicately restored to return the mosaic to its former beauty.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is an order of chivalry established on 4 June 1917 by George V. The Order includes five classes in civil and military divisions, in order of seniority: * Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GBE)* Knight or Dame Commander (KBE or DBE)* Commander (CBE)* Officer (OBE)* Member (MBE).
